GENERAL PRINCIPLE OF THE ADULT CARE PROGRAM
The objective of the adult in-home care services is to support and enhance the dignity and independence of physically disabled, mentally disabled or elderly adults and to assist them to remain in their own communities with family and friends, thereby avoiding institutionalization.
PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy of the program is based on:
- The promotion of personal independence.
- The promotion of personal and family responsibility in planning and providing care.
- The encouragement of family and community involvement in providing care.
- The encouragement of a lifestyle consistent with community norms.
HOME-MAKER SERVICES
- Basic house cleaning
- Laundry
- Cooking
- Meal Preparation
- Once a year Spring Clean-Up (Done by all 3 workers).
PENSION RUN
Pension runs are once a month (on pension issue dates.) The rates are: $30.00 for a return trip and $15.00 for a one-way trip. Adult workers do provide assistance.

Pension Runs are to assist elders with shopping for groceries and needs once a month.
Other activities include:
- Shuttle service to the annual All Native Basketball Tournament in Prince Rupert, BC.
- Annual Salmon Fest event in Prince Rupert, BC.
- Annual Riverboat Days festivities in Terrace, BC.
- Annual Aboriginal Day festivities in New Aiyansh, BC.
- Christmas month festivities.
- Other activities may not happen when other events arise.
HOME SUPPORT SERVICES
In-home respite is available to individuals to assist families in providing special care services to elders, or palliative care patients. This program is to provide independence and enhance dignity to our clientele enabling them to remain in our community with family and friends. We also act as a liaison for elders when required.
Requirements to receive in-home respite care are:
- Family is to submit a letter to the Gitlax̱t’aamiks Village Government for loved ones requiring respite care.
- Provide a Dr’s note stating the reason supporting why respite care that is needed.
- A care plan made by the Doctor or family member must be included.
Home Care Services:
- Assist clients with bathing, showering, bed and bath.
- Laundry.
- Cleaning of client’s personal space.
- Cooking meals and feeding.
- Making sure they are taking medications.
- Calling health when client’s needs.
HOME CARE SERVICES
Information required when applying for Homemaking or Home Support Services are:
- Copy of Income Tax
- Social Insurance Number
- Other income (i.e. CPP, Widows Pension)
- Membership or Status number

PCC relies on personal qualities of the caregiver to build a non-judgmental and empathetic relationship. It will take some practice for some people and will help manage behaviors (avoid behaviors).
